" Mysterious $1 Million Collection"

The Catholic press in a number of diocese recently carried a story an-nouncing a million dollar donation from the Board of the Slovak Catholic Fed-eration to the National Conference of Catholic Bishop's United States Catholic Conference Relocation Building fund. While the news release from the NCCB/USCC in Washington, DC was accurate, the newspaper articles were misleading.

Member fraternal societies of the Slovak Catholic Federation were ap-proached on the occasion of a SCF Ex-ecutive Board meeting about a possible contribution totaling one million dol-lars. The representatives of those so-coeties supported the concept and pro-mised to recommend such a donation to their respective boards.

The Slovak Catholic Federation as such is not able to make donations due to the fact that its own income is com- posed of donations from societies and individuals. However, it is natural and proper that when Slovak Catholics engage in an unified effort benefiting a cause connected with the Church, they do so under the name of the Slovak Catholic Federation. One of the Chief objectives of Father Murgas in establ-ishing the Federation in 1911 was to bring together Slovak Catholic societies and individuals in regard to the church.

In providing the above explanation, the Rev. Msgr. Joseph Adamec, National President of the Slovak Catholic Federation states:"It makes me happy to know that the SCF is fulfilling one of its major objectives and that it is be-ing recognized for what it is by the leadership of the Catholic Church on the United States."

Msgr. Joseph V. Adamec
National President
