Excerpts from Luddy Transcript dealing with Bishop Hogan writing to a priest

Dear Father Coleman. "Is Father ill? He doesn't seem to be himself." Please do not resent this inquiry on the part of the sisters. It was prompted by nothing but concern for your well being. Nor did their solicitude occasion a visit yesterday. Rather, we discussed the community undertaking of Sacred Heart promotional programs, thanks for my books, etc. But, when I asked about you, I could sense uneasiness. There seems to be a feeling that your initial enthusiasm diminishes.

For one thing, Father Dennis, there is a conviction that you are burning the candle at both ends. Go,go,go - to the point of late hours - at times very late. While this concerned me as well, I experienced a greater degree of genuine worry over the matter of youth involvement. Especially when trips to to transport, the loaning of car to, the bringing of one or more the convent for overnight - even in your room. You see, they know of my contrary stipulation - apparently you told them of it. Which leads me to a crucial point. If this youth involvement is discoverable, and how can it not be, there is extreme danger of courtroom disaster. Even though your analysis is remembered relative to young and older, you don't seem to recall my analysis - the perception of others in this time of hysteria. I realize now more than ever the validity of a professional observation. "They can't seem to get into their heads the dynamite of the situation."

Least you think that I try to level a sand castle with battleship rifles, allow me to cite this: last week I learned that the Johnstown family, armed with professional reports, will seek damages. If a conference fails to resolve the issue, it will go into court action - publicity and all. No wonder I asked you to lie low, or that I fear further compromising of the case and jeopardizing of the Diocese.

If there is to be any youth association for the time being - i.e. until the case is settled, I shall want to know. For you will be immediately removed from your assignment….
